Jango Song Of The Day-Joe Tex

Artist:Joe Tex
Song:Show Me
Album:25 All Time Greatest Hits

Joe Tex was one of the top soul singers of the 60s. If it seemed like he was preaching from the soul pulpit, that comes from his church upbringing. He was born Joseph Arrington Jr. Aug. 8, 1933 in Rogers, TX. He started out singing in church and moved to New York in 1954 after winning a local talent contest. He recorded some singles for King Records in the 50s. But things didn't take off for Tex until he started working for Nashville song publisher and record producer Buddy Killen. In 1961, James Brown had a hit with the Tex song Baby You're Right. In 1965, Killen took Tex to Muscle Shoals and Hold What You've Got was his first big hit. It reached #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Killen released it on his Dial label distributed by Atlantic. Show Me was one of several lesser hits until Tex hit the top ten in 1967 with Skinny Legs And All followed by I Gotcha. All his Dial hits are on this Varese comp. In 1972, Joe Tex converted to Islam and changed his name to Joseph Hazziez. He returned to the top ten with the 1977 hit Ain't Gonna Bump No More (With that Big Fat Woman) and had retired to his farm in Texas until his death from a heart attack on Aug. 13, 1982 at age 49. If you're a soul fan. don't overlook Joe Tex. Here's Joe Tex performng Show Me in Stockholm, Sweden 1968.
