Jango Song Of The Day-Ian Gomm

Artist:Ian Gomm
Song:Hold On
Album:Summer Holiday

Ian Gomm was a big part of the British Pub Rock movement of the 70s. He's just not as high profile as his buddies Nick Lowe and Dave Edmunds. Hold On was his only top 20 pop hit. He was born Mar. 17, 1947 in Ealing, England. He started out in the music business as an apprentice in the mechanical department of EMI while playing in bands on the side. He quit his job and joined the influential group Brinsley Schwarz which of course included Nick Lowe. When that group folded in 1975, Gomm moved to Wales and built a recording studio. He still has this business and has worked with many groups over the years including The Stranglers, Amon Duul II and Alexis Korner. He continued to work on his own songs and Albion Records released Summer Holiday in 1978. Epic picked it up for distribution in the US and released it as Gomm With The Wind. Hold On reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1978. Gomm also co-wrote the Nick Lowe classic Cruel To Be Kind and played on the Dave Edmunds album Subtle As A Flying Mallet. Gomm's follow up albums didn't sell and after touring in the early 80s, he built a new studio at his home in Wales and concentrated on building that business. He has occasionally recorded most recently in 2002 with Rock 'N' Roll Heart featuring Nanci Griffiths. He also owns his 70s recordings and has released Summer Holiday through the British label Line Records. Here's Ian Gomm being interviewed and performing Hold On in Sweden Feb. 1982.
