Artist:Cat Stevens
Song:Father and Son
Album:The Very Best Of Cat Stevens
English singer songwriter Stephen Georgiou was discovered in 1966 by producer Mike Hurst of the folk rock group The Springfields. Hurst sent his demo to Decca and the newly dubbed Cat Stevens was signed to Deram Records. Stevens had some chart success in England but switched to Island Records in 1970. He was on A & M Records in the US. He proceeded to become one of the most popular singer songwriters of the 70s. Father and Son from the 1970 album Tea For The Tillerman is very typical of his music. This Very Best comp is OK but Universal has recently released a 4CD box set called Cat Stevens that covers his entire career in the 60s & 70s. Disillusioned with the music business, Cat Stevens formally became a Muslim on Dec. 23, 1977 and changed his name to Yusuf Islam. He retired from the music business and opened a Muslim school in London. He occasionally recorded Muslim music over the years but has returned to pop music in 2006 with the album An Other Cup as Yusuf Islam. I haven't heard it but Cat Stevens' 70s music still sounds good today.
