Johnny Benson wins Phoenix Craftsman Truck race

Johnny Benson's mechanical problems in the last two NASCAR Craftsman Truck races have basically killed any chances of winning the championship. He still has a mathematical chance but points leader Todd Bodine would have to collapse completely and that doesn't seem likely. But Benson won the pole for the Casino Arizona 150 at Phoenix and he's not going to quit.

Teammates Johnny Benson-#23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota & Mike Skinner-#5 Toyota start in the front row. Of course Benson wants to lead and get five bonus points. But he gets loose on lap 2 and Skinner doesn't give him enough room to keep Benson from spinning out. Fortunately, he doesn't hit anything but Benson does have to go to the back of the field. Car owner Bill Davis expressed his annoyance with Skinner. Skinner continues to lead. Mike Bliss-#16 Strutmasters Chevy passes Skinner for the lead on lap 26 but then pits with a flat tire and goes a lap down.

Rick Crawford-#14 Circle Bar Truck Stop blows a tire and hits the wall to bring out a caution on lap 34. Everyone pits and Mark Martin-#6 Scott's Miracle Gro Ford get the lead. Matt Crafton-#88 Menards Chevy is second and Mike Skinner is third. Johnny Benson works his way through the field and takes the lead from Martin on lap 120. Despite several cautions, Johnny Benson easily wins the race. Todd Bodine finishes fourth and leads Benson by 112 points. One more race at Homestead Miami and Bodine will be the 2006 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series champ.
