Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Valentina Shevchenko vs Jennifer Maia

Here's the match video of Valentina Shevchenko defending her UFC Flyweight Championship against Jennifer Maia. Valentina was a big betting favorite. After the fight, my podcast co-host Schwan Humes and I decided that Jennifer was more interested in surviving five rounds than actually winning the fight. It's very similar to the strategy that Liz Carmouche used against Valentina last year. They are looking for a moral victory which is stupid. We have a fight between a kickboxer and a boxer but much of this fight was on the ground or in the clinch in what Angela Hill calls hugging. Jennifer won round two when she was able to reverse a Valentina takedown. But neither of them did much in top position. So if they weren't doing anything, why didn't ref Herb Dean break them up? He warned them a couple of times. I can only assume he didn't want to affect a championship fight. I don't agree with that. The fight wasn't good. Forcing them to do more probably would have resulted in a better fight. I scored the fight 49-46 for Valentina and so did the judges. Jessica Andrade is likely the next title contender. You can be sure she won't be looking for any moral victories. Enjoy the video.
