Song:Buddy Holly
Album:Weezer (Blue Album)
Though Buddy Holly was not their biggest chart hit, it is the song that made Weezer successful because of a brilliant Spike Jonze directed music video. Weezer was formed in 1992 in Los Angeles. Lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Rivers Cuomo led the band Avant Garde. They moved from Connecticut to Los Angeles in 1988. They changed their name to Zoom and split up in 1990. He formed Weezer in 1992 with bassist Matt Sharp, drummer Patrick Wilson and guitarist Jason Cropper. Weezer was Cuomo's childhood nickname. Cuomo knew Sharp and Wilson from other bands and they were good friends. Weezer signed with Geffen Records and Ric Ocasek was brought in to produce their debut album. Cropper was replaced by Brian Bell during the recording of the album when Cropper's pregnant girlfriend showed up unannounced at the recording studio. Cuomo didn't like Cropper's behavior and he knew Bell from the band Carnival Art. Their 1994 album Weezer is known as the blue album because they have released several albums titled Weezer with different color covers. Buddy Holly was the second single. The Spike Jonze directed music video placed Weezer in an episode of Happy Days. It won four MTV Music Video Awards. Buddy Holly didn't chart but the music video drove album sales and it was certified 3XPlatinum. Though Weezer has had other successes like the 2005 top ten hit single Beverly Hills, the blue album is still their most successful album. It is available as a budget CD. Weezer recorded seven albums for Geffen. Sharp left Weezer in 1998 due to creative differences. Scott Shriner has been Weezer's bassist since 2001. Weezer currently records for Atlantic. They have a new album coming out in 2019. Here's the music video for Buddy Holly by Weezer.
