Song:Viva La Vida
Album:4 CD Catalogue Set
Coldplay has been one of the more successful bands in recent years mostly as an album band. But they have had some hit singles. The 2008 single Viva La Vida topped the charts in the US and England. Lead singer and pianist Chris Martin and lead guitarist Jonny Buckland met in 1996 at University College London and they formed the band Pectoralz. Bassist Guy Berryman joined and the name was changed to Starfish. They played local clubs. Martin brought in his friend Phil Harvey as manager. He's not a musician but he has been accepted as Coldplay's fifth member. Will Champion was brought in to play drums. The name Coldplay was suggested by a classmate who once used it for his band. They released an EP in 1998 that was sent to record companies as a demo. They released another EP on the small label Fierce Panda. Coldplay signed with EMI's Parlophone label in 1999. Initially they were on Nettwerk in the US but later they were moved to Capitol probably because their continued popularity merited a larger promotion budget. After releasing a couple of EPs, Coldplay released their debut album Parachute in 2000. Yellow was their first top ten hit in England. It also charted in the US and the album was certified 2XPlatinum. Since then Coldplay has been very successful. Viva La Vida is from the 2008 album Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends. The single Viva La Vida topped the Billboard Hot 100 and the British Singles chart. The album topped worldwide charts and it was the biggest seller of 2008. Coldplay continues to be successful. Their 2014 album Ghost Stories dipped in sales. But they roared back with the 2015 album A Head Full Of Dreams and the hit singles Adventure of a Lifetime and Hymn for the Weekend. EMI has yet to release a greatest hits comp. But they have released Coldplay's first four albums in a reasonably priced 4CD box set. They released the EP Kaleidoscope last year. Coldplay isn't touring right now so we may see a new album in 2019. Here's the video for Viva La Vida by Coldplay.
