Kashif was one of the top R & B producers of the 80s and also had a significant recording career mostly on the R & B charts. Love Changes was his biggest hit in 1988. He was also a pioneer in the use of electronic keyboards in R & B. He was born Michael Jones in 1959 in Brooklyn, NY. Apparently he never knew his parents and bounced around foster homes as a child. By age 15, he was the keyboard player for B.T. Express and they had hits like Do It Til You're Satisfied. After leaving the group, he signed with Arista Records as a producer and recording artist. He renamed himself Kashif which means creator. Kashif's expertise with electronic keyboards got him hired to produce the 1983 Evelyn King hit Love Come Down. This led to other production work including Whitney Houston's debut single You Give Good Love. He also had success on the R & B charts as a solo artist including the 1983 hit I Just Gotta Have You and the 1986 duet with Melba Moore Love The One I'm With. Love Changes reached #2 on the R & B Singles chart in 1987 and was Kashif's biggest hit. Meli'sa Morgan had already established herself with the 1985 R & B chart topper Do Me Baby. Though Kashif usually wrote his own songs, Love Changes is a cover. It was written by Skip Scarborough who is best known for co-writing the 1988 Anita Baker hit Giving You The Best That I Got. It was originally recorded by the funk rock group Mother's Finest and was an R & B hit in 1979. You can get all of Kashif's hits on this budget comp. Of course black music changed in the late 80s with the rise of New Jack Swing and Kashif hasn't done much in recent years. He last recorded in 2004 and wrote a music industry how to book in 1996. Here's the video for Love Changes by Kashif featuring Meli'sa Morgan.
