AccuRadio Song Of The Day-The Veils

Artist:The Veils

Song:Low Lays the Devil

Album:Total Depravity

Though The Veils started out as a band over 20 years ago, these days they are a Finn Andrews solo project. He writes and produces everything, sings and plays all the instruments and hires musicians for touring. This is not unusual but I think listeners want to know this. Andrews was born Aug. 24, 1983 in London, England. His father is Barry Andrews first of XTC and then Shriekback. Growing up, Andrews split his time between London and Auckland, New Zealand where his mother is a professor. While attending high school in Auckland, Andrews played in bands and recorded a demo that he sent to record companies. He signed with Blanco y Negro, a label formed by Rough Trade owner Geoff Travis as a joint venture with Warner Bros. After Travis had disagreements with Warners, he ended the label and released The Veils 2002 debut album The Runaway Found on Rough Trade. The Veils were a band for the first four albums. But Andrews was always dissatisfied with their direction and eventually forced them out. Wait a minute. Doesn't Andrews write and produce everything? Shouldn't he be dissatisfied with...himself? I know. Stop using logic. Some musicians like Andrews are control freaks. So by the 2016 album Total Depravity, The Veils were a solo act and he signed a new deal with Nettwerk Records. He now hires musicians for tours. This album is available as a budget CD. Meanwhile Andrews appeared in the 2017 season of the TV series Twin Peaks. Directors seem to like his music as guys like David Lynch, Paolo Sorrentino and Tim Burton have all used his music in their films. After releasing a 2019 solo album to complete his Nettwerk contract, Andrews signed with Universal's V2 label for The Veils' 2025 album Asphodels. The Veils already toured New Zealand. And there are plans to tour later this year. Here's the video for Low Lays the Devil by The Veils.
