AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Eric Burdon

Artist:Eric Burdon

Song:Spill the Wine

Album:Absolutely the Best

After they split up in 1966, The Animals lead singer Eric Burdon had his greatest success recording with the band War. Spill the Wine was a top five hit in 1970. They always seemed like an odd fit with Burdon. And after two albums with Burdon, they had great success on their own. Burdon was born May 11, 1941 in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne, England. One of his high school teachers got him into Newcastle College of Art and Industrial Design. That's when he got interested in music when he met future Animals drummer John Steel. He started hanging out at the local jazz club. That's where he became good friends with Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon. The Animals were formed in 1962. They were part of the first wave of British Invasion bands. The Animals were very successful until they split up in 1966. Burdon and Barry Jenkins formed Eric Burdon and the Animals. They didn't have the same success and they split up in 1969. Burdon moved to San Francisco where he met War. They started working together and released the 1970 album Eric Burdon Declares "WAR". The album was produced by Jerry Goldstein who worked with War for many years. The single Spill the Wine reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. After releasing a second album, Burdon suffered an asthma attack on stage and War decided to continue without him. Like I said, War went on to great success. Burdon started his own band but hasn't had much success. This comp has tracks from the 60s. Burdon last released an album in 2013. He still plays live shows. And he's a member of the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. Here's Eric Burdon and War performing Spill the Wine on the German TV show Beat-Club 1970.
