We Don't Talk About Bruno topped the charts in 2021. It is from the Disney animated film Encanto. It was the first song from a Disney animated film to top the charts since A Whole New World from the 1991 film Aladdin. The songs for Encanto were written by Lin-Manuel Miranda and the score was composed by Germaine Franco. Miranda is one of today's most prolific songwriters for stage and screen. I first heard of him through the Broadway musical In the Heights. And I still think that's his best work because it's autobiographical. But he had already written the songs for the 2016 film Moana. So it's not surprising that Disney would want more. Encanto is set in Colombia so Miranda and the filmmakers went there to get the vibe they wanted. Then he brought in Germaine Franco to compose the score. She composed the score for the 2017 film Coco. Encanto was a big success. But We Don't Talk About Bruno topping the charts was a big surprise. At first it was a viral success. And that's probably as far as it would have gotten in the past. But Billboard has recently added streaming criteria to the Billboard Hot 100. The result will be more fluke hits like We Don't Talk About Bruno. In the context of the film, the characters led by Pepa are gossiping about Bruno. It's a group sing led by Colombian actress Carolina Gaitan. Eight singers participate in the song. Carolina mostly does TV at home in Colombia. The soundtrack album for Encanto is available in two versions. One version just has the eight songs and the other deluxe edition has the complete score. I recommend that one because it's cheaper.
