Song:You're Nothing Without Me
Album:City of Angels: Original Broadway Cast Recording
James Naughton won a Tony award for the 1990 Broadway musical City of Angels. Though he had already appeared in films and on TV, he was best remembered at the time for singing and dancing in a Dr. Pepper commercial. The stage is his first love so I'm sure the success of City of Angels made him very happy. City of Angels was written by Larry Gelbart of MASH with music by Cy Coleman and lyrics by David Zippel. It's a film noir from the writer's point of view. The writer is played by Gregg Edelman. Naughton plays his fictional detective. You're Nothing Without Me is their big number together. Naughton was born Dec. 6, 1945 in Middletown, CT. His parents were both teachers. His younger brother is actor David Naughton. He was in the 1981 film An American Werewolf in London. After graduating from Yale School of Drama, Naughton went looking for his big break on Broadway. When that didn't happen, he turned to TV and even commercials like that Dr. Pepper commercial. His most notable TV role was as Michael Bower on the sitcom Who's the Boss?. Mostly he did TV movies and guest shots. City of Angels was his return to Broadway after ten years on TV. Edelman was born Sept. 12, 1958 in Chicago. His acting debut was in a 1979 touring company of Evita. Similar to Naughton, Edelman prefers Broadway to films and TV. His big break came on a 1987 revival of Cabaret. And that led to City of Angels. Both guys were nominated for Tonys but only one could win. So I think Naughton's win overshadowed Edelman. The Broadway Cast album is available as a digital download. Naughton won another Tony for the 1996 revival of Chicago. On TV, he was a regular on the series Gossip Girl and he was the host and narrator of the CourtTV series The Greatest Trials of All Time. Like many Broadway performers, Naughton performs a one man show and he has recorded a couple of albums to promote that. Though Edelman has done film and TV, he's still a regular on Broadway. He was Tony nominated for the 1998 revival of 1776 and the 2002 revival of Into the Woods. His latest Broadway appearance was in the 2024 musical Water for Elephants.
