AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Dobet Gnahore

Artist:Dobet Gnahore

Song:Abiani

Album:Ano Neko

Dobet Gnahore is an African singer songwriter who has been successful mostly in Europe because she lived in France. Many African musicians live there. In recent years she has returned to Africa to work with musicians there. She appears on folk festivals worldwide. She was born June 17, 1982 in Ivory Coast. Her father is percussionist Boni Gnahore. They lived in an artists collective and that's where Dobet learned her musical craft. The turning point came when French musician Colin Laroche de Feline came to the village for a three day visit and it turned into a three year residency. They have been together ever since writing songs together. He leads her band and plays guitar. Dobet moved to Marseille, France in 1999 due to the civil war in the Ivory Coast. She learned how to write songs from Congolese musician Ray Lema. Abiani is from Dobet's 2004 debut album Ano Neko. She recorded that and several more albums for the Belgian label Contre Jour. They specialize in African music. The album was produced by Contre Jour owner Michel De Bock. Dobet and de Feline  wrote all the songs. You can get this as a budget CD. In recent years,  Dobet has returned to Africa looking to learn from musicians there. She has also switched to Cumbancha Records which is based in Vermont. She just released a new album Zouzou and is currently on tour. Here's Dobet Gnahore performing Abiani.
