Artist:Midnight Star
Song:Slow Jam
Album:The Very Best of Midnight Star
Midnight Star had success in the 80s mostly on the R&B charts. Though the 1983 album No Parking on the Dance Floor was their most successful album and the single No Parking on the Dance Floor was their biggest hit, supposedly Slow Jam was their most requested song live. Maybe it should have been released as a single. Midnight Star formed in 1976 at Kentucky State University in Frankfort, KY by Reggie Calloway, Belinda Lipscomb, Melvin Gentry, Kenneth Gant, Bill Simmons, Bo Watson and Jeff Cooper. They were self contained. They produced and wrote everything themselves. They later added Calloway's brother Vincent Calloway. A 1978 New York City showcase got them a record deal with Dick Griffey's label SOLAR Records. His partner was Soul Train owner Don Cornelius and they were distributed by RCA. No Parking on the Dance Floor was Midnight Star's fourth album. The single No Parking on the Dance Floor reached #2 on the R&B Singles chart and #27 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified 2XPlatinum. Though Slow Jam was never released as a single, it became one of their most requested songs. As I said, Midnight Star was self contained. Reggie Calloway was credited as producer. And they all wrote. Lead singers Belinda Lipscomb and Bo Watson wrote Slow Jam with Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds. Supposedly this was his first songwriting credit. You can get all their hits on this budget comp from the British label Castle. Midnight Star continued to have success until Reggie and Vincent Calloway left in 1986. They went on to form the band Calloway and have had success as producers. Midnight Star wasn't as successful after they left and they went on hiatus after losing their record deal with SOLAR. They reunited in 2000 and released an album in 2002. That's the last time Midnight Star released an album but they still perform live usually with other similar bands from the 80s. Here's Midnight Star performing Slow Jam. It looks like this is from the 80s.
