AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Cymarron

Artist:Cymarron

Song:Rings

Album:Rock Artifacts Vol. 2

The 1971 single Rings was a top 20 hit. It was also a top 10 Adult Contemporary hit. It was the only big hit for the vocal group Cymarron. They had one other chart single so technically it's not a one hit wonder. They only recorded one album. The formation of Cymarron and the recording of Rings came out of the Memphis music scene. Rick Yancey, Sherrill Parks and Richard Mainegra were all singers working for producer Chips Moman at his Memphis recording studio American Sound. Yancey and Mainegra also played guitar and wrote songs. Rings was written by Eddie Reeves and Alex Harvey. Reeves was a songwriter who at the time was running United Artists Records' Los Angeles office. Harvey worked there as a songwriter. Reeves wanted to write a song for the wedding of his buddy Bob Hamilton. Rings is about a couple whose relationship was estranged and they reconciled and married. They recorded a demo and gave it as a wedding gift to Hamilton and his bride. Hamilton played it for Marty Lacker of the Memphis Mafia as a possible song for Elvis Presley. Lacker played it for Moman and he wanted Cymarron to record it. They had recently signed with Columbia's short lived Entrance label. Mainegra sang lead and Rings reached #17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #6 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Moman produced the album using Memphis studio musicians like Reggie Young and Bobby Emmons. The problem was Cymarron only recorded one album. There may have been creative differences between Yancey and Mainegra. You can get Rings on this Sony various artists CD. Rings was recorded by Tompall & the Glaser Brothers and they scored a top ten country hit. Lobo charted with his 1974 recording. And Alex Harvey recorded Rings on his 1972 album Souvenirs. Yancey and Mainegra were both members of the 90s country group The Remingtons. And Mainegra co-wrote the song Separate Ways which was a 1972 hit single for Elvis Presley. Here's a video for Rings by Cymarron.
