Artist:Merril Bainbridge
Song:Mouth
Album:The Garden
The 1994 top five hit single Mouth was the only big hit for Australian singer songwriter Merril Bainbridge. One of her other songs charted so she was not technically a one hit wonder. But Mouth is the only song you will remember. Subsequent singles did poorly so ultimately Merril quit the music business. She was born June 2, 1968 in Melbourne, Australia. She started performing as a child. She was in a few bands and hung around recording studios when she met producer George "Siew" Ooi and Owen Boiwell and Stan Paulzen of the band Tlot Tlot. They started working together and Merril signed with Gotham Records owned by Litlle River Band lead singer John Farnham. The album The Garden was released in Oct. 1994. When it got lost in the Christmas rush, Gotham re-released the album in Feb. 1995 and the single Mouth topped the Australian charts for six weeks. The album was produced by Siew and Boiwell and Merril wrote most of the songs including Mouth. Universal picked up the album in the US and Mouth reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album is available as a budget CD. The 1998 album Between the Days didn't do nearly as well even in Australia. So she seemed to have stalled. Merril recorded an album that was supposed to be released in 2004. But Merril decided to shelve the album, stay home with her family and quit the music business. She had just had her son. She also believed that illegal streaming would kill the music business. Instead the main culprit Napster went out of business. Merril only had the one hit single anyway. Success in the future would have been questionable. Merril created a maternity clothing line Peachy Mama in 2011. She says on her website that she sold Peachy Mama in 2021 for a whole heap of money. So it all worked out in the end. Here's the video for Mouth by Merril Bainbridge.
