Here's a song from the 1953 MGM musical Kiss Me, Kate featuring Ann Miller and Tommy Rall. I am going to feature Tommy Rall and talk about Ann Miller some other time. Rall was featured in several MGM musicals in the 50s and then became an opera singer. He was never a big star. He was born Dec. 27, 1929 in Kansas City, MO. and he grew up in Seattle. He took dancing lessons as a child and performed in local theater. His family moved to Los Angeles in the 40s. Rall took tap dancing lessons and appeared in several Universal films including Private Buckaroo (1942) as a member of the jitterbugging Jivin' Jacks and Jills. Then he moved to New York and appeared in several shows, most notably the principal dancer in the 1950 show Call Me Madam. Then he returned to Hollywood and signed with MGM. Kiss Me, Kate was his first film. This was the film version of Irving Berlin's hit Broadway show. The stars were Kathryn Grayson, Howard Keel and Ann Miller. Rall plays Bill Calhoun and he's in a romance with Ann Miller's character. They were the featured dancers. Rall is not a featured singer. On From This Moment On, it's a duet with Ann along with dancers Bobby Van and Bob Fosse. Fosse was also the choreographer. From This Moment On was not in the Broadway show Kiss Me, Kate. It is from Porter's 1950 show Out of This World. Fosse choreographed that show and danced to this song. So adding it to this show may have been his idea. The Kiss Me, Kate soundtrack is available as a budget CD. Rall appeared in other MGM musicals like Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) and Invitation to the Dance (1958). He returned to Broadway and became an opera singer with the New York City Opera. Though Rall was respected by his fellow dancers like Gene Kelly and Donald O'Connor, he was never a star.
