AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Blu Cantrell

Artist:Blu Cantrell

Song:Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops)

Album: So Blu

Hit 'Em Up Style was a top five hit in 2001. It was the only big hit for Blu Cantrell. One of her other songs charted so she is not a one hit wonder. To date she has only released two albums. Most folks should remember this song but know nothing about the singer. She was born Tiffany Cobb Mar. 16, 1976 in Providence, RI. Her mom is former beauty queen and jazz singer Susi Franco. After watching her mom sing, Blu recorded a demo and took it to producer Christopher "Tricky" Stewart. He started using her as a background singer. She was in the girl group 8th Avenue. They were supposed to be on Interscope and produced by Teddy Riley. But then Riley left Interscope and 8th Avenue's record deal was cancelled. BTW, Blu was a childhood nickname. So Blu started recording her own album. Stewart was planning to put her in his girl group 321. At the time, LA Reid was president and CEO of Arista Records. He signed Blu  and the album So Blu was released in 2001. The lead single Hit 'Em Up Style reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album was certified Gold. I think women loved Blu's attitude in the video. Though Stewart produced a lot of the album and Blu co-wrote most of the songs, Hit 'Em Up Style was written and produced by TLC producer Dallas Austin. This album is available as a budget CD. When the 2003 album Bittersweet didn't do as well and there were no hit singles, the end was near. When Arista was folded into RCA and LA Reid left, Blu decided not to renew her contract. She hasn't recorded since then. I don't think she is active anymore. Her website is kaput and she last posted on Facebook in 2017. Here's the video for Hit 'Em Up Style (Oops) by Blu Cantrell.
