AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Seun Kuti + Egypt 80

Artist:Seun Kuti + Egypt 80

Song:African Airways

Album:A Long Way to the Beginning

Seun Kuti is the youngest son of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti. And after his dad's death, Kuti took over his band Egypt 80. Kuti sings, plays alto sax and writes and produces everything. He was born Jan. 11, 1983 in Lagos, Nigeria. By the age of nine, he was opening for his dad's shows. After Fela Kuti died in 1997, Seun took over his band Egypt 80. He was a full time musician at age 18. Kuti has been releasing albums since 2008. African Airways is from the 2014 album A Long Way to the Beginning. It's on the French label Because Music and on Knitting Factory in the US. The album was produced by Robert Glasper. He has produced some of Kuti's other albums. Kuti wrote most of the songs, sings and plays alto sax. He released his latest album in 2024. When Kuti performs live, he performs a mix of originals and his dad's songs. He always wants to pay tribute to him. Kuti is politically active and many of his songs are political. So I think if you enjoy Afrobeat and Fela Kuti, you should enjoy Seun Kuti as he is a chip off the old block. Here is Seun Kuti + Egypt 80 performing African Airways at the 2012 North Sea Jazz Festival in The Netherlands.
