AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Toure Kunda

Artist:Toure Kunda

Song:Em'ma

Album:Dance of the Leaves

The Senegalese group Toure Kunda are best known for appearing on Carlos Santana's 1999 album Supernatural performing Africa Bamba. Santana liked them so much he took them on tour. Toure Kunda have been successful in Europe and Africa since the 80s. Em'ma is one of their earliest and most popular songs. Tunda is the Senegalese word for family. Initially there were three brothers. Amadou Toure was the oldest along with Ismaila Toure and Sixu Tidiane Toure. They all moved to Paris by the late 70s. They signed with the French label Celluloid. Em'ma is from the 1980 album Em'ma Africa. Tragedy struck when Amadou died in 1983. But they brought in another brother Ousmane Toure. He was in the group until 1992. There is another brother Seta Toure who has performed with the group occasionally but he usually leads his own group. There is also a sister Sixu Daby Toure. She's one of the dancers in the video. Toure Kunda still record and tour. They released their latest album in 2018. This budget comp is a good intro to their music. Here's Toure Kunda performing Rapada and Em'ma at the New Morning in Paris Sept. 2018 for Zycopolis TV. Musicians are Mike Lapierre on keyboards, Laye Kane on guitar, Mansour Semega on bass, Cyril Tronchet on drums and Nicolas Leroy on percussion.
