Artist:Cilla Black
Song:You're My World
Album:Cilla in the 60's
Cilla Black was England's most popular singer in the 60s because of her association with The Beatles, their manager Brian Epstein and their producer George Martin. The 1964 single You're My World was her biggest hit and her signature song. She had great success in England before turning to TV in the 70s. She was born Priscilla White May 27, 1943 in Liverpool, England. She worked as a cloakroom attendant at The Cavern Club in Liverpool where the Beatles played. They liked her and encouraged her to play local clubs. When the local music paper Mersey Beat featured her, they accidently called her Cilla Black. She decided to keep the name. John Lennon introduced Cilla to The Beatles' manager Brian Epstein. He signed her, got her a record deal with EMI and sent her to the recording studio to work with George Martin. Cilla's first #1 hit in England was her cover of the Burt Bacharach-Hal David song Anyone Who Had a Heart. It was her second single. You're My World was the third single. It also topped the British singles chart and it reached #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 mostly because she was on tour with The Beatles. You're My World was called Il Mio Mondo when it was written and recorded by Italian singer songwriter Umberto Bindi. Martin thought it would be a great song for Cilla. But he needed English lyrics and he hired veteran songwriter Carl Sigman to do that. He specialized in writing lyrics for old or foreign language songs like the 1958 Tommy Edwards hit It's All In the Game. Johnny Pearson conducted the orchestra. You're My World was the biggest hit in Cilla's career though she continued to have chart success in England through the 60s. This budget comp covers her 60s recordings. Her final top ten hit in England was Something Tells Me in 1971. She already had her own variety show on BBC called Cilla which ran from 1968-76. Most of her TV work was as a host and performer. She recorded her final album in 2009. ITV aired a 50th anniversary special, a biopic and documentary. Cilla Black died on Aug. 1, 2015 at age 72.
