AccuRadio Song Of The Day-MXPX

Artist:MXPX
Song:Chick Magnet
Album:The Ultimate Collection

MXPX were a popular skate punk band in the late 90s. They were very successful in the CCM market. They never had a big hit single but Chick Magnet is probably their best known song as it appeared in the 2004 film Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. MXPX are from Bermerton, WA. They went to high school together. The lead singer, bassist and main songwriter is Mike Herrera. Other original members were Andy Husted on guitar and Yuri Ruley on drums. They were called Magnified Plaid because Husted had a thing for plaid shirts. The name was shortened to M.P. but Ruley used x's when he made the band's posters so they became MXPX. They signed with the CCM label Tooth & Nail in 1993. They were on Polydor for secular distribution. Husted was replaced by Tom Wisniewski. MXPX recorded three albums for Tooth & Nail. Chick Magnet is from the 1996 album Life In General. The song is obviously supposed to be tongue in cheek. In the video, the "chick magnet" is played by Ruley. The band got a big boost when Chick Magnet appeared in the 2004 film Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle. Most of MXPX's success was in the CCM market. A&M Records chairman Al Cafaro thought MXPX could be much bigger. So he signed them for the 1998 album Slowly Going the Way of the Buffalo and sent them on tour with Bad Religion. The album did better than previous albums. But I think A&M was looking for a big commercial breakthrough and that never happened. After A&M dropped MXPX in 2005, they signed with SideOneDummy for the 2006 album Panic. The album did well but MXPX returned to Tooth & Nail for the 2007 album Secret Weapon. MXPX is still around but their days of commercial success are probably over. This 2CD comp covers their 90s Tooth & Nail recordings. MXPX self released an album last year after raising the money through Kickstarter. They still perform live but they don't tour as much as the used to. Here's the video for Chick Magnet by MXPX.
