AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Hooverphonic

Artist:Hooverphonic
Song:Mad About You
Album:The Magnificent Tree

Portishead fans will want to check out the Belgian group Hooverphonic. They are a trip hop group who are a big deal at home. But they have also had success in Europe with hits like Mad About You. Hooverphonic are from Sint-Niklaas, Belgium led by Alex Callier who plays bass, keyboards and writes all the songs. His partner Raymond Geerts plays guitar. At first they called themselves Hoover but changed it to Hooverphonic to avoid legal problems. Demos got them a deal with Sony but lead singer Esther Lybeert pulled out. Liesje Sadonius sang lead for the 1996 album A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular. But she was only supposed to be temporary. After a tour 18 year old Geike Aenaert was brought in and she was lead singer for most of Hooverphonic's run. The band first got attention when the single 2Wicky was used in Bernardo Bertolucci's 1996 film Stealing Beauty and I Know What You Did Last Summer. Mad About You is from the 2000 album The Magnificent Tree. The single charted across Europe. The album was a big hit at home in Belgium. The song has appeared in films like Driven, New Best Friend and A Lot Like Love. There are two videos for this song. I'm using the one that has Geike romancing Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. The song is about forbidden love. Hooverphonic continued to have success in Belgium. But they left Sony in 2006 over lack of promotion. They released the 2007 album The President of the LSD Golf Club on their own label. Geike left to go solo. She says she wanted to contribute more to the music but the guys weren't open to that. She has released two solo albums. Hooverphonic returned to Sony for the 2011 album The Night Before. Their 2018 CD Looking For Stars is on Universal. So Hooverphonic is still around. They are currently on a European tour. But I think their early albums will appeal to fans of trip hop groups like Portishead. Here's the video for Mad About You by Hooverphonic.
