AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Johnny Van Zant

Artist:Johnny Van Zant
Song:Brickyard Road
Album:Best Of Southern Rock

Johnny Van Zant is the youngest of the three Van Zant brothers and the current lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd. His oldest brother was the late Ronnie Van Zant who was Lynyrd Skynyrd founder and lead singer and his other brother is .38 Special founder Donnie Van Zant. Of course Ronnie died in that tragic plane crash. So Johnny grew up in their shadow. He did have success with the 1990 single Brickyard Road. He was born Feb. 27, 1959 in Jacksonville, FL. In the 70s, he was lead singer of Austin Nickels Band. The band name was changed to Johnny Van Zant Band and they recorded three albums for Polydor. They shortened their name to Van Zant and recorded a 1985 album for Geffen. Then Van Zant left the music business to drive a truck for a couple of years. He returned in 1987 as lead singer of the reformed Lynyrd Skynyrd and he still does that today. But then he had some success with the 1990 album Brickyard Road on Atlantic. The single Brickyard Road topped the Mainstream Rock chart. The song is a family tribute written by Johnny and Donnie Van Zant, guitarist Michael Lunn and album producer Robert White Johnson. Both Lunn and Johnson had worked with the Van Zants in the past. You can get Brickyard Road on this Rhino various artists budget comp. Since then Van Zant has mostly performed and recorded with Lynyrd Skynyrd. And occasionally he has revived Van Zant with Donnie. Brickyard Road is his only solo hit. here's the video for Brickyard Road by Johnny Van Zant.
