Song:The Worst
EP:Sail Out
After a false start as a teen, R & B singer songwriter Jhene Aiko is making inroads in the R & B market. The Worst is her biggest hit to date but one would think it is just the beginning. Her full name is Jhene Aiko Efuru Chilombo and she was born Mar. 16, 1988 in Los Angeles. Her dad is black and her mom is Japanese. Her older sisters Miyoko and Jamila were in the 90s girl group Gyrl. They toured with Immature but only released a couple of singles. Jhene started out as a featured singer with the R & B group B2K. Epic Records sold her as the cousin of B2K rapper Lil' Fizz. She says she knew him when they were kids but is not related to him. She appeared in several videos and was set to release an album in 2003. But it was never released and she asked out of her contract with Epic. She returned to school and gave birth to her daughter in 2008. The father is R & B singer O'Ryan. She released a mixtape in 2011 and this led to a deal with Def Jam. She toured with Drake and appeared on his 2013 CD Nothing Was The Same. The EP Sail Out was released Nov. 2013. The Worst was the third single and it reached #9 on the R & B Singles chart in May 2014. Jhene wrote the song with Myron Birdsong of the production team Fisticuffs who she frequently works with. Her full length debut CD Souled Out was set for release last spring but the release was delayed because of the success of The Worst. It was released Sept. 2014. Most of the album was produced either by Fisticuffs or Def Jam A & R director No I.D. He used to work with Kanye West. She was on tour with The Weeknd. The CD has done well but she needs that breakout single. She is nominated for four Grammys. Jhene also raps as J. Hennessey. I think she has a bright future. Here's the video for The Worst by Jhene Aiko.
