AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Cano Estremera

Artist:Cano Estremera
Song:Awilda
Album:Bobby Valentin Presenta Al Cano Estremera

Cano Estremera is a salsa singer from Puerto Rico who stands out in the crowd because he is albino. He started out in the 70s as lead singer in Bobby Valentin's orchestra and has been a successful solo artist since the mid-80s. He was born Carlos Enrique Estremera Colon Sept. 2, 1958 in Santurce, Puerto Rico. Cano is a nickname that refers to his pale complexion. Bobby Valentin was arranger for the Fania All Stars. He left in 1975 and started his own label Bronco Records and started his own band. Estremera replaced original singer Marvin Santiago in 1978. He became very popular. Did his albino appearance have something to do with that? Sure but Estremera is a great singer. After recording four albums as lead singer of Valentin's band, Valentin decided to produce a solo album for Estremera in 1982 titled Bobby Valentin Presenta Al Cano Estremera. After a 1984 solo album, Estremera left Valentin to go solo. Estremera was very successful in Puerto Rico and other Latin American countries in the 80s and 90s. He won the Paoli award for Salsa Singer of the Year in 1986. He last recorded in 1999 but I'm sure he still tours. Salsa music fans should check him out. Here's Cano Estremera with Bobby Valentin's orchestra performing Awilda 1982.
