Artist:Crazy Elephant
Song:Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'
Album:25 All-Time Greatest Bubblegum Hits: The Ultimate Collection
This 1969 top 20 hit fits the pattern of other groups churned out by the Kasenetz-Katz music factory. Create the music using studio musicians and then try and form a real band afterwards. It wasn't a good long term strategy and that's why most of the hits were one hit wonders. This holds true for Crazy Elephant. This group was created as a vehicle for session vocalist Robert Spencer. He used to be a member of The Cadillacs and by the late 60s had settled in to doing session work. As usual, Kasenetz-Katz regular Joey Levine was a key behind the scenes figure as he wrote Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' with British record producer Denny Cordell. Levine was usually lead singer with Ohio Express among others. Kasenetz-Katz had a deal with Buddah Records. But when Buddah rejected Gimme Gimme Good Lovin', they shopped it to Bell Records and it reached #12 on the Billboard Hot 100. Then they produced an album and put a touring band together. Yes, I know that's ass backward. Some of the album was produced in England and featured future 10cc member Kevin Godley on lead vocals. Not surprisingly, the album and the Crazy Elephant touring band sunk without a trace. So it's very similar to other Kasenetz-Katz groups. One hit and that's it. The album is available on CD but you might enjoy this various artists comp from Varese that covers the bubblegum music genre very nicely. It's got 25 songs. Here's a video for Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' by Crazy Elephant.
