Jango Song Of The Day-Alice Smith

Artist:Alice Smith
Song:Dream
Album:For Lovers, Dreamers & Me

Neo soul singer Alice Smith made her recording debut on this 2006 album. She made a bit of a splash, got nominated for a Best Urban/Alternative Grammy and in late 2010 we're still waiting for a follow up. Alice was born in New York City in 1978 and grew up in Washington, DC. She was singing backup vocals while attending Fordham University when she was spotted by Lee Bright of the British label BBE Records. He signed her up with distribution ftom Epic and her debut For Lovers, Dreamers & Me was released in 2006. Despite a lot of ctitical acclaim and the Grammy nomination, the album didn't sell. Alice co-wrote several of the songs on the album including Dream. Guitarist Alex Dickson from Robbie Williams' band, Imani Coppola, drummer Alex Elena and veteran jazz trumpter and arranger Michael Leonhart produced the album. Leonhart has worked with Steely Dan and Talking Heads among others. Dream also appeared in an episode of the HBO series Entourage. Alice Smith is still playing clubs but it doesn't look like she is under contract to BBE or Epic anymore. I noticed she did turn up singing backup vocals on the latest CD by Aussie pop singer Gabriela Cilmi. Let's hope someone signs her up very soon because Alice has a lot of talent. Here's Alice Smith performing Dream on Ellen Jan. 2008. I believe this was her national TV debut.
