Artist:The Ugly Ducklings
Song:Nothin'
Album:Nuggets Vol. 2: Original Artyfacts From The British Empire & Beyond
So back in the 60s The Ugly Ducklings were a big deal here in Toronto because they were from Toronto. I doubt that most fans outside Canada have ever heard of them. And they weren't around that long. They started out in 1965. Dave Bingham was lead singer. Rodger Mayne & Glynn Bell played guitar. John Read played bass and Robin Baers played drums. They were a basic garage band influenced by British Invasion bands. They had an album on the local York Town label and they had some hit singles locally but they were gone by 1967. What has kept The Ugly Ducklings and other obscure garage bands alive is various artists garage band comps. This second volume of Rhino's Nuggets series concentrates on foreign bands. There's some really odd stuff on this box set. The Ugly Ducklings recordings are available on Sundzed in the US and Unidisc in Canada. Rodger Mayne died in 2004 but Dave Bingham has been very active in keeping The Ugly Ducklings name alive by reuniting the group occasionally and releasing new material on Freeway Records. This clip of The Ugly Ducklings performing Nothin' at the Peel Pub in Toronto in 2000 is available on DVD.
