Album:The Very Best Of Willie Hutch
Willie Hutch was a fixture on the R & B charts in the 70s. He was very versatile. He was a great singer, songwriter, producer and wrote several scores for Blaxploitation films. Brother's Gonna Work It Out was his first hit from his first film. He was born Willie Hutchison Dec. 6, 1944 in Los Angeles and grew up in Dallas. He started writing songs as a teen when he was with the doop wop group The Ambassadors. He shortened his name, moved to Los Angeles and recorded the single Love Has Put Me Down for Johnny Rivers' Soul City label in 1964. This led to Hutch writing songs and co-producing The Fifth Dimension's 1967 debut album Up, Up And Away. Then he recorded an album for RCA in 1969. In 1970, producer Don Davis asked Hutch to write lyrics to a song he was working on. That song was the Jackson 5 hit I'll Be There. Berry Gordy hired him as a house producer and he produced albums for Michael Jackson and Smokey Robinson. Then Hutch was contacted about writing some songs for the 1973 film The Mack. The score turned out to be one of the best Blaxploitation film scores and Brother's Gonna Work It Out reached #18 on the R & B charts. He also wrote the soundtrack to the 1975 film Foxy Brown. Hutch continued to have success on the R & B charts until he left Motown for Whitfield Records in 1979. This comp has his Motown hits. He returned to Motown in 1982 and recorded a song for the 1985 film Enter The Dragon. Hutch left Motown and moved back to Dallas. He would record occasionally but mostly lived off royalties when hip hop guys started sampling his music. Willie Hutch died on Sept. 19, 2005 at age 60.
