Jango Song Of The Day-The Whispers

Artist:The Whispers
Song:And The Beat Goes On
Album:Greatest Hits

The Whispers are a very durable R & B group that had several R & B hits in the 80s. The 1980 hit And The Beat Goes On crossed over to the pop charts. They are led by lead singer Scotty Scott (born Wallace Scott Sept. 23, 1943 in Fort Worth, TX) and his twin brother Walter Scott. They started The Whispers in Los Angeles in 1964 along with Gordy Harmon, Marcus Hutson and Nicholas Caldwell. They did record in the 60s and had a top ten R & B hit in 1969 with The Time Has Come. Harmon was replaced by former Friends Of Distinction member Leaveil Degree in 1973. They had their biggest success with Dick Griffey's Solar label and producer Leon Sylvers III. You might be familiar with his family group The Sylvers. He produced all of Solar's acts and produced And The Beat Goes On. He co-wrote the song with William Shelby of Lakeside and Stephen Shockley of Shalamar. Both groups were also on Solar. The song topped the R & B charts and reached #19 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Whispers had another big hit with Rock Steady in 1985. The Whispers moved to Capitol in 1990 and had some success there. This comp has their Solar and Capitol hits. Terrible cover. And The Beat Goes On got a big boost when it was used in the video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and it was also the basis for Will Smith's 1998 hit Miami. Marcus Hutson died in 2000 but The Whispers still tour today and I understand they are planning to record a gospel CD. Here's The Whispers performing And The Beat Goes On 1980.
