Artist:The Teen Queens
Song:Eddie My Love
Album:The Doo Wop Box II
There weren't very many female groups in doo wop so this 1956 top 20 hit is notable and also very memorable. The Teen Queens were sisters Betty & Rosie Collins. Their brother and the guy behind this song was Aaron Collins. They all grew up in Arkansas and eventually moved to Los Angeles. Aaron was a member of The Jacks and they had a hit with Why Don't You Write me in 1955. He was also a member of The Cadets and they had a hit with Stranded In The Jungle in 1956. He had a relationship with Modern Records owners the Bihari Brothers. So he got a record deal for his teenage sisters at RPM Records. Betty was 16 and Rosie was 14. Of course that's the appeal of the song. They sound so young. Aaron wrote Eddie My Love with veteran arranger Maxwell Davis and the Bihari Brothers took a credit with their Sam Ling pseudonym. Eddie My Love reached #14 on the pop charts in Mar. 1956. Of course the Bihari Brothers licensed the song and The Chordettes & The Fontaine Sisters had hits with covers of Eddie My Love in 1956. Subsequent singles by The Teen Queens didn't do as well and they left RPM for RCA in 1958 and then Antler in 1959. They were through in 1961. But there's no question that Eddie My Love is one of those songs that recalls more innocent times and that's why the song is still memorable today. Of course you can get it and plenty of doo wop classics on Rhino's 4CD box set The Doo Wop Box II. Here's a video for Eddie My Love by The Teen Queens.
