Artist:Soul Coughing
Song:Soundtrack To Mary
Album:Irresistable Bliss
The eclectic alternative group Soul Coughing had some limited success in the 90s. With their mix of various musical styles and electronic sampling, they had a significant cult following. The lead singer and main songwriter was Mike Doughty (born June 10, 1970 in Fort Knox, KY). He was working as a doorman at the New York club The Knitting Factory in 1992 and performing on the side. One of the main guys at that club is avant garde jazz artist John Zorn. And though he had nothing to do with the formation of Soul Coughing, he is an influence. Doughty got together with sampler Mark De Gil Antoni (born June 20, 1962 in San Francisco) and they decided to start a band with bassist Sebastien Steinberg and drummer Yuval Gabay. The name Soul Coughing came from one of Doughty's songs. Doughty described the band's music as Deep Slacker Jazz. Soul Coughing started playing locally and signed with Slash Records in 1993 after they got the attention of producer Mitchell Froom. Their debut CD Ruby Vroom was released in 1994. Irresistable Bliss was their 1996 follow up. Doughty wrote all the songs on the album and Soundtrack To Mary and the album itself had modest success. Soul Coughing released one more album in 1998 but they started arguing over songwriting credits and Doughty became addicted to heroin. Mark De Gli Antoni released a solo album in 1999 and now does film music. Soul Coughing split up in 2000. Gabay & Steinberg formed UV Ray and both play sessions. Mike Doughty kicked his heroin habit and started writing for The New York Press. He signed with ATO Records in 2004 after meeting label owner Dave Matthews at the 2004 Bonaroo festival. His latest CD Golden Delicious was released Feb. 2008. Here's the video for Soundtrack To Mary by Soul Coughing.
