Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Drive-By Truckers

Artist:Drive-By Truckers
Song:Lisa's Birthday
Album:Brighter Than Creation's Dark

The Drive-By Truckers are a mix of Southern rock and country. They live in Athens, GA but the core members are from Alabama. Brighter Than Creation's Dark is their latest CD. The roots of the group were when college pals Mike Cooley and Patterson Hood started a punk band called Adam's House Cat in 1985. Hood is the son of Muscle Shoals bassist David Hood. The band got regional acclaim but never got a contract so they split up in 1991. But Hood and Cooley continued to work together and formed Drive-By Truckers in 1996. They recorded three albums independently but their big breakthrough was the 2001 CD Southern Rock Opera. Lost Highway picked up the distribution of the CD but the group signed with New West Records. Up until then, Cooley and Hood wrote most of the songs but Jason Isbell and his wife Shonna Tucker joined and started writing. Drive-By Truckers have done well on the Independent Album charts so they're being perceived as Southern Rock as opposed to Country. Jason Isbell left in 2007 but his ex-wife Shonna Tucker stayed and she has some lead vocals on Brighter Than Creation's Dark. Cooley wrote Lisa's Birthday. It's more of a country song and features pedal steel guitarist John Neff. Legendary Muscle Shoals keyboard player Spooner Oldham appeared on the album and also toured with the band. The album reached #37 on the Billboard Hot 200. Drive-By Truckers are keeping busy. They backed up Bettye LaVette on her 2007 CD The Scene Of The Crime and also back up Booker T. Jones on his new CD Potato Head. Southern Rock fans should check out Drive-By Truckers. Here they are performing Lisa's Birthday.
