Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Taj Mahal

Artist:Taj Mahal

Song:Everybody's Got To Change Sometime

Album:Taj Mahal

Taj Mahal was very important in reviving the blues in the late 60s. He was born Henry St. Clair Fredericks May 17, 1942 in New York City and grew up in Springfield, MA. His father was a jazz pianist and his mom sang in church. Henry took a liking to blues as a youngster. While studying agriculture at the University Of Massachussets, he came up with the name Taj Mahal and started performing in local clubs. He moved to Los Angeles in 1964 and formed The Rising Sons with Ry Cooder. The group released one single on Columbia but the label didn't know what to do with the group. Taj Mahal stayed with Columbia as a solo artist and this 1968 debut was a big hit with blues fans. He also would tour with the legends of blues and introduce them to a younger audience. So Taj Mahal was a big part of reinvigorating fan interest in the blues. Of course Taj Mahal is more than a blues musician and his most recent CD Mkutano was with musicians from Zanzibar. He also won a couple of Grammys in recent years. Here's Taj Mahal with guitarist Jesse Ed Davis performing Everybody's Got To Change Sometime in 1968.
