Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Lucy Pearl

Artist:Lucy Pearl

Song:Dance Tonight

Album:Lucy Pearl

Lucy Pearl was a short lived R & B supergroup and Dance Tonight was their one big hit. The group was the brainchild of Raphael Saadiq of the hip hop group Tony! Toni! Tone!. He was working with the popular R & B singer D'Angelo and wanted to put a group together but D'Angelo wasn't able to participate. Saadiq approached mixmaster Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest and singer Dawn Robinson of the girl group En Vogue and Lucy Pearl was born. Their debut album was released in 2000 and Dance Tonight was in the hit film Love & Basketball. Dance Tonight was a big hit and things looked good. But then Dawn Robinson left to go solo. She was replaced by professional backup vocalist Joi Gilliam. Lucy Pearl recorded one single with Joi but it was unsuccessful and they split up. Raphael Saadiq has gone on to have a lot of success as a solo artist with the 2003 CD Instant Vintage. Dawn Robinson released a solo CD in 2002 and an attempt to reform En Vogue in 2005 was unsuccessful. Muhammad released a solo CD in 2004 and there are currently plans to reform A Tribe Called Quest. Joi Gilliam released an unsuccessful solo CD in 2002 and has returned to singing backup vocals. So Lucy Pearl had big plans but I guess the big egos got in the way. The video for Dance Tonight is pretty good. Here it is.
