Yahoo LAUNCHCAST Song Of The Day-Dr. John

Artist:Dr. John

Song:Right Place Wrong Time

Album:In The Right Place

Today Dr. John is regarded as a legend of New Orleans music. He made his name in the 60s with his weird stage show. Right Place Wrong Time is his one big pop hit. He was born Mac Rebennack Nov. 21, 1940 in New Orleans. He started out in the late 50s as a session guitarist and pianist on records by his idol Professor Longhair, Frankie Ford & Joe Tex. A mishap with a gun injured his hand and he was forced to give up the guitar. Rebennack moved to Los Angeles in the mid-60s and started playing sessions there. He was fooling around in the studio and came up with the Dr. John The Night Tripper character. The music was a mix of New Orleans R & B and psychedelia and Dr. John started wearing full Mardi Gras regalia on stage. This got him some attention and he signed with Atco Records. The 1973 album In The Right Place was produced by legendary New Orleans producer Allen Toussaint and featured The Meters. Right Place Wrong Time was a top 20 pop hit. Working with those guys probably helped focus Dr. John's music as he is known to be inconsistent. He has occasionally resurfaced over the years but has never been able to repeat that one commercial success. He currently records for Blue Note and his latest CD is 2006's Mercenary. Here's Dr. John and The Meters performing Right Place Wrong Time on the PBS series Soundstage in 1976.
