O.V. Wright was yet another great soul singer from Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell. Unfortunately Wright had drug problems and died prematurely. Overton Vertis Wright was born Oct. 9, 1939 in Leno, TN. He started out as a member of the gospel group The Sunset Travellers and went secular in 1964 with the song That's How Strong My Love Is. Of course Otis Redding covered that song and had a big hit with it. Wright was under contract to Don Robey's Peacock Records and recorded on his Backbeat label. That's when he first worked with producer Willie Mitchell. Wright continued to have R & B hits until his drug problems landed him in prison in 1974. He signed with Hi Records in 1977. Though disco was king at the time, Wright continued to record soul classics. Let's Straighten It Out is from the 1978 album The Bottom Line. Wu Tang Clan sampled it in their song America Is Slowly Dying. This 2CD comp covers his Hi studio recordings. Vol. 2 covers his live recordings. O.V. Wright never had mainstream success and his continuing drug problems caused a fatal heart attack and he died on Nov. 16, 1980 at age 41. He is yet another forgotten soul singer worth checking out.
