Artist:Stan Getz & Charlie Byrd
Song:Baia
Album:Jazz Samba
Stan Getz started out as a tenor sax player influenced by Lester Young but by the 60s he got interested in Brazilian music and is best known for combining jazz & bossa nova. The Getz/Gilberto album featuring the hit Girl From Ipanema is better known but 1962's Jazz Samba came first. Guitarist Charlie Byrd introduced Getz to Brazilian music. In 1961 he went on a US State Dept. tour of South America and returned with some bossa nova tapes. Byrd convinced Getz and Verve's Creed Taylor to record a bossa nova album. They also brought in guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim and Jobim's song Desafinado was a big hit. They did several Brazilian standards including this great version of Baia. It was a ground breaking album and it's a must for jazz fans. Of course Getz did more in his career than bossa nova but it became his calling card. Here's Stan Getz performing Wave.
