Artist:The Spinners
Song:Could It Be I'm Falling In Love
Album:The Very Best Of The Spinners
The popular 70s soul group The Spinners are identified with the Philly sound but they're from Detroit and started out with Motown. They originally signed with Harvey Fuqua's Tri-Phi label but Motown bought the company. G.C. Cameron was the lead singer at the time. The Spinners didn't do that well at Motown and were dropped in 1972. Cameron stayed at Motown and Philippe Wynne became the new lead singer. He was born Apr. 3, 1941 and was lead singer with Bootsy Collins' band The Pacesetters. The Spinners signed with Atlantic and were assigned to producer Thom Bell. And that's where the Philly Soul connection comes in as Bell was one of the top producers there. They had a very lush soul sound and I'll Be Around & Could It Be I'm Falling In Love were top 5 pop hits. Wynne was a great lead singer and The Spinners had several more hits until Wynne left to go solo in 1977. This Rhino comp has all their hits. After that, The Spinners winded down and Wynne wasn't that successful as a solo artist. Phillippe Wynne died of a heart attack while on stage in Oakland on July 14, 1984 at age 43. The Spinners continue to tour and G.C. Cameron even returned to the group a few years ago. Here's The Spinners performing Could It Be I'm Falling In Love on Top Of The Pops in March 1977.
