Maya Azucena is an R & B singer songwriter from Brooklyn. She's been singing in New York City clubs for several years but is now starting to get more attention. She released her first CD Maya Who? independently in 2003. It got her some attention on some neo soul websites and was a big favourite on CD Baby. You can find a lot of indie black music there. She writes her own songs and in 2006 got together with guitarist Christian VerHalen and his group called The Rooftop. This got the attention of R & B label Purpose Records and Junkyard Jewel is her debut release on that label. Purpose is an adult oriented soul label owned by George Littlejohn & Russell Johnson. VerHalen co-wrote most of the songs, plays guitar and produced the CD. He's also been working with rapper Kendra Ross. You may have heard Maya on Stephen Marley's latest release Mind Control. Maya is an excellent singer and her musical style has an acoustic base very similar to someone like India.Arie.
