Artist:The Rolling Stones
Song:Paint It Black
Album:The Very Best of the Rolling Stones 1964-1971
As I did with The Beatles, I am taking a second look at The Rolling Stones. And I may do that with other bands. AccuRadio plays just about anything at random so I never know until I decide to do it. Some days I think they are running out of new stuff to play. Of course The Rolling Stones were the number two British Invasion band. They tended to have a grittier sound than The Beatles. The 1966 single Paint It Black is their fifth biggest hit and was named #174 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs. So it was a significant song at a time when the band was looking to experiment. And the most notable element of this was the use of the sitar played by Brian Jones. There's also the use of the Hammond organ played by Bill Wyman and the castanets played by Charlie Watts. So though Mick Jagger and Keith Richards wrote the song as usual, it was probably more collaborative than most of their songs. It was also an indication that The Rolling Stones were getting into psychedelia in a big way. Paint It Black was released only as a single in England. But Decca in the US released it on the 1966 album Aftermath. Either way, Paint It Black topped the charts worldwide. Aftermath was certified Platinum. The best place to get Paint It Black is on this reasonably priced comp of the band's Decca singles. I think it's one of their best songs. Here's the video for Paint It Black by The Rolling Stones.
The Rolling Stones made some very good music and they also gave a lot of credit to many Blues artists over the years. For some reason their music never clicked with me. I don't know why Frank. But I was never a big fan of theirs. Still they are very good and very talented, all of them. Thanks so much for the information sir. David.
