Artist:Grupo Niche

Song:Etnia

Album:Una Aventura...La Historia

The Colombian Salsa band Grupo Niche has been around since the late 70s. They probably had their greatest success when they recorded for Sony Latin in the 90s. The leader of Grupo Niche was Jairo Varela. He was born Dec. 9, 1949 in Quibdo, Colombia. He was the producer singer and main songwriter. The band was formed in 1978. They moved to Cali in 1982 and had success with the 1984 album No Hay Quinto Malo and the single Cali Pachanguero. This was on the Colombian label Codiscos. They were one of the most popular Salsa bands in Colombia. Etnia is from the 1995 album Etnia. Etnia means ethnicity. Varela wrote all the songs on the album and produced. The rest of the band was Alvaro Granobles, Javier Vasquez and Willy Garcia on vocals, Carlos Vivas on piano, Daniel Silva on bass and Carlos Guerrero, Bobby Allende, Douglas Guevera and Luisito Quintero on percussion. Grupo Niche had more success after they signed with Sony Latin and moved to Miami. This comp CD is a good intro to their music. Though Varela died in 2012, Grupo Niche is still around. They record for miami's PPM Records And their latest album Niche Sinfonico won a 2023 Latin Grammy for Best Salsa album. Here's Grupo Niche performing Etnia 2006.
