Artist:Kahil El'Zabar's Ritual Trio
Song:Return of the Lost Tribe
Album:Live at the River East Art Center
Drummer Kahil El'Zabar has been a member of the Chicago jazz collective the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM) since he was a teen. The members of AACM tend to be on the adventurous side of the jazz spectrum. He was born Clifton Blackburn Nov. 11, 1953 in Chicago. His father was a drummer and El'Zabar started playing drums at an early age. As a teen he played with the Art Ensemble of Chicago. He joined AACM while attending Lake Forest College and became AACM's chairman in 1975. He changed his name after studying African culture in Ghana. Upon his return, El'Zabar formed the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble and they released an album in 1980. His other major band is The Ritual Trio. Like many of the AACM members, El'Zabar records a lot and it can be hard to keep track of him. Return of the Lost Tribe is from the 2005 album Live at the River East Art Center in Chicago. The album is on Delmark Records who have been releasing this kind of music since the late 50s. The band is Ari Brown on tenor sax, Yosef Ben Israel on bass and El'Zabar on drums. Violinist Billy Bang is the special guest. El'Zabar currently records for the British label Spiritmuse and his latest album America the Beautiful was released in 2020. This was baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett's final album before his death. El'Zabar's music is recommended to fans of free jazz. Here's Kahil El'Zabar with Corey Wilkes on trumpet, Alex Harding on baritone sax, James Sanders on violin and Ishmael Ali on cello performing Return of the Lost Tribe July 2023.
