Artist:Julie Brown

Song:Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun

Album:Dr. Demento 20th Anniversary Collection: The Greatest Novelty Records of All Time

This 1984 novelty record did not chart but the video was very popular on MTV. Julie Brown started out as a comedian with a valley girl character. And that's how she got into recording novelty songs. She should not be confused with the MTV VJ Downtown Julie Brown. Julie was born Aug. 31, 1958 in Van Nuys, CA. Her parents worked at NBC and her great grandfather was character actor Frank O'Connor. She was princess of the Homecoming court at Van Nuys High School. After going to acting school, Julie started performing in comedy clubs like The Improv. Her big break came when Lily Tomlin caught her act and cast her in the 1981 film The Incredible Shrinking Woman. And that got her regular work on TV. Along with her actor husband Terrence McNally, she got the idea of recording with the valley girl character that used in clubs. He wrote Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun. They sold it to Rhino Records and released the EP Goddess in Progress in 1984. The video directed by Tom Daley went into heavy rotation. Then Dr. Demento played it on his radio show. The song never charted but it was a hit. In those days, radio stations would not play songs that were popular on MTV. Julie eventually released an album on Rhino. You can get Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun on this 2CD Dr. Demento comp. Then Julie and McNally wrote and appeared in the 1988 film Earth Girls Are Easy. She also appeared in the 1995 film Clueless and the spinoff TV series. Since then she has appeared in various movies and TV shows with varying degrees of success. She also does a lot of voiceovers for animated films. And writing for TV like the Disney Channel series Camp Rock. She did record an album in 2010. But I think she is still fondly remembered for Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun. Here's the video for Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun by Julie Brown.
