Artist:Niko Moon
Song:Good Time
Album:Good Time
Singer songwriter Niko Moon topped the country charts with the 2020 single Good Time. He was set with a major label but decided to leave and record for his own label. Why did he leave? He gave a reason but most artists would have stayed. I will explain. He was born Nicholas Cowan Sept. 20, 1982 in Tyler, TX. His family moved to Douglasville, GA. His father was a drummer who quit touring to drive a truck and raise his family. Moon used online instructional videos to learn to play guitar. He ran cross country in high school and earned a scholarship at Sanford University in Alabama. But he was more interested in music and dropped out of school and moved to Atlanta. He worked during the day and played music at night. He became friends with Zac Brown and they started writing songs together. Several of their songs were recorded by the Zac Brown Band. At the time Moon was credited as Nic Cowan. He released an EP as Nic Cowan in 2001. He was also in the band Sir Rosevelt with Brown and they released a 2017 album. Then he changed his name to Niko Moon and signed with RCA Nashville. He released a 2020 EP followed by the single Good Time which topped the Country Singles chart and reached #20 on the Billboard Hot 100. This was followed by the album Good Time. So he had pop crossover potential. Moon wrote and produced the album with Josh Murty who played guitar for Maren Morris. After a subsequent singles didn't chart, Moon released the 2022 EP Coastin' and then he announced his departure from RCA. Based on the reason he gave, it looks like RCA was bugging him for new music and Moon wants to take his time. If that bugs you that much, I guess that's fine. But most artists would put up with it and stay with the label because they are a big part of the Nashville promotional machine. Moon still tours and released an album on his own label in 2024. He won't have the same success without that machine. Maybe he should stick to songwriting. Here's the video for Good Time by Niko Moon.
