AccuRadio Song Of The Day-Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, Pink

Artist:Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, Pink

Song:Lady Marmalde

Album:Moulin Rouge: Music from Baz Luhrmann's Film

You probably all remember this inescapable chart topper from 2001. The popularity of this record was fueled by MTV's constant airing of the music video. It worked because the soundtrack album and the film were successful. I didn't like it but I'm not the audience for this. Moulin Rouge is a two hour music video. And there were so many songs in the film that Interscope released two soundtracks plus an album of Craig Armstrong's score. It took Baz Luhrmann over two years to get the rights to all the songs. And then he had to convince all the artists and their record companies to allow it. This cover of LaBelle's Lady Marmalade was the big hit from the album mostly because of the music video. The record topped the charts and the soundtrack was certified 2XPlatinum. This version is not in the film. It's part of a medley. So the version featuring Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya and Pink was recorded for the soundtrack album. Luhrmann produced most of the soundtrack music. But for Lady Marmalade, he brought in Missy Elliott to produce along with Interscope's Ron Fair to work with the singers. Fair has a lot of experience working with female singers. Other than Lil' Kim's rap, this was a straight cover of LaBelle's version. Christina was the biggest star of the four and she says she really enjoyed doing the music video with the others. Usually the vocals are recorded separately and the four would have met to make the video. It got mixed reviews from critics but MTV and their viewers loved it. It's also a discography orphan. The soundtrack album is available featuring all kinds of singers. But it does not appear on a Christina Aguilera or Pink comp. On the 2008 Christina Aguilera comp Keeps Gettin' Better: A Decade of Hits, Lady Marmalade only appears on the international edition and that's not available in North America. Lady Marmalade also appears on plenty of various artists comps. But I recommend the soundtrack album. Here's the video for Lady Marmalade, Lil' Kim, Mya, Pink.
