Artist:Dropkick Murphys

Song:I'm Shipping Up to Boston

Album:The Warrior's Code

The Dropkick Murphys are a Celtic punk band. Their biggest success came when I'm Shipping Up to Boston was used in Martin Scorsese's 2006 film The Departed. They were formed in 1996 in Quincy, MA by lead singer Mike McColgan, bassist Ken Casey, guitarist Rick Barton and drummer Jeff Ema who was replaced by Matt Kelly. The band was named after pro wrestler and sanitarium owner Dr. John "Dropkick" Murphy. They toured with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones. And after releasing a few EPs, the Dropkick Murphys signed with Hellcat Records. This was an offshoot of Epitaph Records owned by Brett Gurewitz of Bad Religion. He started Hellcat so his friend Tim Armstrong of Rancid could have his own label. Dropkick Murphys released the 1998 album Do or Die produced by Rancid's Lars Frederiksen. McColgan left the band and joined the Boston Fire Department in 2001. The rest of the band felt McColgan didn't want to be there and was just going through the motions. McColgan returned to music in 2002 with The Street Dogs. He was replaced by Al Barr of The Bruisers. Barton left in 2000 because he wasn't getting along with Casey. He was replaced by James Lynch, a second guitarist Marc Orrell plus Ryan Foltz on mandolin and Robbie "Spicy McHaggis" Medeiros on bagpipes. He was replaced in 2003 by Scruffy Wallace. Then Foltz left and was replaced by Tim Brennan. They continued to release albums. They had some success getting videos played on MTV and placing songs in video games. But finally they had chart success when I'm Shipping Up to Boston appeared in the 2006 film The Departed. The song is based on something Woody Guthrie wrote. It's not even a song. Casey found it in the Guthrie archives and turned it into a song. It appeared on the 2005 album The Warrior's Code and then the soundtrack album for The Departed. Both are available. The Warrior's Code was Dropkick Murphys final album for Hellcat. Since then they have recorded for their own label. Their latest album Turn Up That Dial was released Apr. 2021. Dropkick Murphys continue to be a popular touring and album band. Sometimes it only takes one hit to drive many years of success. Here's the video of I'm Shipping Up to Boston by Dropkick Murphys.
