Wild Thoughts was one of two big hits from DJ Khaled's 2017 album Grateful. It is his most successful album to date. He was born Khaled Mohamed Khaled Nov. 26, 1975 in New Orleans. His parents are Palestinian immigrants. Khaled says he is a devout Muslim. His brother Alec Ledd is an actor. Khaled started as a DJ. His big break came when he worked at radio station WEDR in Miami. He hosted a couple of shows including one with Luther Campbell of 2 Live Crew. While working there, he is trying to get a record deal. He released his 2006 debut album Listennn...the Album on his own Terror Squad label with Koch (now E1) distribution. He released four albums that way. For the 2011 album We the Best Forever, Khaled signed with Cash Money/Universal. Other than better distribution and promotion, I don't think Cash Money helped him much. After three albums on Cash Money, Khaled released the 2015 album I Changed a Lot through the Sony owned distributor RED. This led to a deal with Epic. The 2017 album Grateful was his second album on Epic. The single I'm the One topped the Billboard Hot 100 and Wild Thoughts reached #2. It remained there for seven weeks while Luis Fonsi's Despacito was #1. I looked this up on a website that gives point values to chart position. These two songs are about equal. Wild Thoughts has one of my hip hop pet peeves. I have no problem with sampling. But this song uses Santana's Maria Maria as a base and they just perform over it. I didn't like that. Santana wrote Maria Maria with Wyclef Jean. He made a diplomatic comment. What's he supposed to say? He's getting paid. The Product G&B also worked on Maria Maria and they didn't like Wild Thoughts. Grateful was certified Platinum. Other than the new cover, I don't know why this album is a Deluxe Edition. That's the version available on CD. Khaled continues to have success.
