Song:Now That We Found Love
Album:Peaceful Journey
This 1991 cover of The O'Jays classic Now That We Found Love was the biggest hit for Heavy D & The Boyz. It's likely that if Dwight "Heavy D" Myers had not died prematurely, today he would be running a record company similar to what Don Was is doing at Blue Note Records. Myers had a gift for discovering new talent. He was born May 24, 1967 in Mandeville, Jamaica but he grew up in Mount Vernon, NY. He formed Heavy D & The Boyz with his high school pals Eddie "DJ Eddie F" Ferrell, Troy "Trouble T-Roy" Dixon and Glen "G-Wiz" Parrish. Myers and Ferrell produced the music. Dixon and Parrish danced. A demo got them a deal with Andre Harrell's Uptown label with MCA distribution. Heavy D & The Boyz broke through with the 1989 album Big Tyme. That had two top ten R&B hits. The album was certified Platinum. Myers appeared on the 1989 Janet Jackson hit It's Alright. Dixon died on July 15, 1990 at age 22 from a two story fall in Indianapolis. The 1991 album Peaceful Journey was dedicated to Dixon. The single Now That We Found Love reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the album was certified Platinum. It would turn out to be Myers' biggest hit. The featured vocalist was Aaron Hall of Guy and Teddy Riley produced. The song was written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and recorded by The O'Jays in 1973. Myers appeared on the 1992 Michael Jackson single Jam and he performed the themes for In Living Color and MADtv. he also convinced Harrell to hire Sean Combs as an intern at Uptown. So yeah, Myers discovered Puff Daddy. He also discovered Jodeci and would become president of Uptown. After two more Heavy D & The Boyz albums, Myers turned to producing hits for Montell Jordan and Soul For Real. He also got into acting in the 1999 films Life and Cider House Rules and the TV series Boston Public. And he recorded again in the late 90s. There is no Heavy D comp in print but Peaceful Journey is available on CD. Myers continued to record and act while he was senior VP at Universal Music. Myers collapsed outside his Los Angeles home and died on Nov. 8, 2011 at age 44. It looks like his weight had a lot to do with his death. Here's the video for Now That We Found Love by Heavy D & The Boyz.
Saw this once a long time ago on MTV. I never knew who sang it or anything about the song. Thank-you so much for the information Frank. David.
